How to Prepare HVAC Equipment for Storms
How Should HVAC Equipment Be Prepared for a Storm?
Make sure your heating and cooling systems are ready for a storm by following this advice from our experts.
- Defend your system against surges
Wherever large appliances, such as a furnace, are plugged into a standard wall socket, install a high-quality surge protector to prevent your equipment from being damaged by a spike in line voltage. Also, don't touch any electrical parts and get help from a technician if you don't usually use surge protectors.
- Be certain that everything is anchored.
To prevent it from being thrown into the air or being washed away during a storm, make sure your outdoor cooling equipment is mounted on a concrete pad and is safely anchored. Use hurricane straps to shield your air conditioning system from strong winds if your region is prone to hurricanes.
- Protect your gear (if possible).
Priority should be given to your family's safety, but if time permits, turn off your heating and cooling system and cover the outdoor equipment with a tarp. When a storm has passed, you must take off the tarp and any debris before turning your system back on.
- Damage Verification
Make sure the system is secure before turning it back on once the storm has passed. Check for any signs of damage first, then clean up any debris from the area around the system. If there is any equipment damage or flooding, contact Our Service Experts for a system inspection. As soon as a professional has looked at the HVAC system, turn it back on. This will help dry the house and keep mold from getting into the machinery or ductwork.
